Love Jesus, follow God?
Where does the Bible say to love Jesus and follow God

A few weeks ago over Thanksgiving holiday i was blessed by two events. The first, on the days (yes multiple) leading up to Thanksgiving i was blessed by a live debate on “What is the trinity”, coming up on my for you tiktok feed. (NOTE: While i enjoy Christian content creators as well as hearing other people perspective, I do not encourage anyone to seek biblical truth from social media… challenge it all in the word). Sorry for the disclaimer now back to my story. This debate went on for 3 days and several hour. While respectful, at times the debate got heated and or the participants began to talk in circles night after night.
The following day i was blessed to enjoy Thanksgiving with my extended family, where once again the subject came up, and just as on the live debate i saw a lot of the same responses. A stong conviction on how each felt, but no simple statement or elevator speach that made their belief clear or easily sharable with another. I say all this to say this thought has been plaguing me for days… Uh, well actually a week now.
That brings me to this morning. While i still do not have that elevator speach that I believe is out there. I was awoken. Yes, awoken. By the thought, “Where does the Bible say to love Jesus and follow God?”
PLEASE NOTE: What follows are the thoughts of a believer in search of the truth. One who believes in the word, but challenges the worldly view of the word. One who holds no authority over the word, there is but one who holds that. Feel free to challenge in love for all of our edification in the comments. Thank you.
Let’s Dig In
A quick search on google (so not an exhaustive review AT ALL), seems to indicate the bible does not say Love Jesus, and follow God. That same search shows that the Bible says:
- Love God
- Follow Jesus.
- Follow God’s commandments (heed his word)
Not the other way around…
The Bible also states:
- Jesus is the word of God. John 1:1-18
- Wrapped in flesh the physical representation of his love.
- The “Holy” Spirit is granted to us when we accept Jesus as Lord (Master) and choose to be his disciples. Aka believe his ways, his teachings are true and desire to immitate his teachings, which results im accepting and following the word (commandments) of God.
Additional Thoughts:
We are to follow the commands of God, Follow listen to the word of God, we are to follow Jesus…. Jesus is the word of God. Jesus is the fulfillment of the commandments. Jesus is both the love of God and the model for loving God.
In Conclusion:
The word seems clear and without contradiction that we are to Love God, and follow Jesus (who is the word/commandments of God). I believe this truth will one day lead me to the elevator speach i desire to explain the relationship between God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit
Family, keep digging in!
Thoughts are always welcomed.
